This year there is a real boom in 3D movies. In 2010 alone, more than twenty 3D films will be released in theaters. One of these films, Streetdance 3D, started in German cinemas on the 3rd of June with much success. With 132 000 visitors Streetdance 3D climbed to No. 2 in the cinema charts -despite the great summer weather, making it the best movie start after ‘Sex and the City 2′.
We had the exciting and challenging task of implementing the entire online campaign for Universum Film. This included strategy, concept, design, programming as well as all the online advertising and ongoing support.
The website is designed to reflect the 3D feeling of the film, through the use of animation and layering. On the site, the user can watch the official trailer with 3-D glasses, browse the extensive image gallery, read background information on the film, trigger a reminder for the film and download some great goodies to get you in a dancing mood.
We are very happy, that our campaign could contribute to this huge success of the film and thank Universum Film very much for their co-operation.

4 commentsThe time has come: after the action-packed start of our online campaign for the film From Paris with Love the viral aspect of the campaign is now active. Here the user can test how much “Wax” he is. Edited film excerpts are shown and the user can see if they are on the same wavelength as Special Agent Charlie Wax (played by John Travolta) by predicting what Wax will say next. Depending on the number of correctly answered questions the user is assigned to a certain Wax-category. Via Facebook Share and Tell-a-Friend functionality, the users can publish their quiz results on Facebook and share it with friends.

After the peaceful underwater world of Unsere Ozeane, our newest project for Universum returns us to the hail of bullets again in the form of From Paris with Love, the action-packed new film starring John Travolta as the unorthodox secret agent Charlie Wax.
At least as awesome and entertaining as the movie is the online-campaign (including concept development, website design and banner campaign) produced by GSDH. The official movie site includes the trailer, an exciting gallery and a reminder service, as well as background information about the story, characters and cast which will provide the user with insights into the high-action world of secret agents. There are great downloadable goodies like the From Paris with Love Screensaver (get it here).
The result is a site which fully captures the action-packed spirit and style of this film: Welcome to Paris, Baby!

The South African representatives at this year’s Design Indaba ended the conference with a bang and presented quality work that South Africans could be proud of. Two companies working with puppets; The Handspring Puppet Company, and the controversial ZA News, showcased innovative work in adult puppeteering.
The Handspring Puppet Company presented the puppets that they created for the incredibly successful West End London play entitled “Warhorse”.
For “Warhorse” the Handspring Puppet Company created life size horses that could easily be manipulated by three puppeteers. The Company managed to created cane horses whose movements are so life-like, that it has to be seen to be believed. Watch the trailer to “Warhorse” here and interviews with the creators here.
ZA News headed by the legendary political satirist Zapiro was next. No stranger to controversy, Zapiro and co-creator Thierry Cassuto are the driving forces behind a satirical political show entitled ZA News.
Featuring all our favourite South African political characters and the satirical gold mine that is South African politics, the show makes for a highly entertaining adult entertainment.

Universum Film gave us the opportunity to create the new online campaign (concept, design, banners, website, social media campaign) for the Jacques Perrin Film OUR OCEANS that brings this magical undersea world to life. The site takes the visitor on an exciting and informative journey through the oceans of our Earth. The user can navigate through a gallery full of fascinating and breathtaking photographs of the sea dwellers and get to know exciting facts about the different species. You’ve definitely never experienced our oceans like this before.

David, one of our design team, has won this month’s prestigious Springleap competition. Launched in February 2008, Springleap is SA’s newest addition to groundbreaking web-based companies taking the online community by storm. Using a similar business model to the USA-based site Threadless, people submit designs for each competition, and the community votes on which design they would like to see printed on a t-shirt. Each month a winner is chosen based on which design gets the most votes.
This month the theme of the competition was “Down The Rabbit Hole”, a reference to Alice in Wonderland. David’s design was the most popular, and has received some great feedback from the Springleap voting community as well as the owners and employees of Springleap.
The winning design is printed on high quality slim cut t-shirts that can be ordered via Springleap, or bought from many stores located around South Africa. The production of World Cup advertising material is running at full speed in South Africa at the moment and foreign companies are looking for agencies like us who are familiar with the country.
So was Sven MĂĽller Design when they entrusted us with the production of their FIFA advertising materials for two big exhibitions in Cape Town and Johannesburg. We gladly took over the complete handling here on-site and found this a great opportunity to show the high professional standard of South African suppliers.
Sven MĂĽller Design is happy that their brochures not only meet European standards but were also produced and delivered quickly and efficiently, and South Africa is looking forward to many orders still to come from all over the world.

GAMER, the latest science fiction masterpiece by Universum Film, will be in German cinemas in January. The opening of the movie will be supported by the official movie site – conceived and designed by GSDH. This amazing flash website will help to build anticipation for this upcoming action spectacle.
Just like the movie, the website encompasses three different worlds. Game - the malicious shooter game entitled “Slayer”, where real prisoners are used by gamers as avatars to fight each other to death. The second world Society – also uses mind-control technology. This world is a shrill, decadent and unscrupulous virtual society. The third world is Reality – the real world, in which millions of people follow the controversial games.
Leading actor Gerard Butler as Kable and his wife Angie, played by Amber Valletta, are both captured in the games and are struggling to escape from them.
The user can navigate between those three worlds and experience different exciting flash designs while he browses through the gallery, has a look behind the scenes or discovers all the special goodies. Next to the homepage we will also be responsible for inGame advertising and banner campaigns.

Here at GSDH we find that there is nothing more satisfying than having happy clients, and we’re ecstatic to ad Castro to that list.
Castro has just launched a new range of their ultra-fashionable clothes with a very exiting campaign that’s sure to spread like wildfire. The Castro Campus Tour is set to go around universities in Germany to enlist students to re-enact some of the photographs that were taken for the current Castro Fashion Guide. Each photograph will be uploaded to the Castro Campus Tour website that was designed and developed by GSDH. Once the photographs are uploaded the public can vote on their favorite! 20 winners will be chosen and given 100 Euro’s each with which they can ignite a shopping fever at any Castro store.

Towels can inspire an imaginative mind, at least when you explore them on the brand new experiential flash website for ABYSS & HABIDECOR. The Portuguese manufacturer supplies luxury hotels from around the world with high quality bath linens.
GSDH was given the task to design a website that gives the user the opportunity to experience the wonderful products of this fascinating brand whilst learning more about the corporate side of the business. The website links these two sections with one easy to use, very unique, circular navigation system within a design that is clean, classic and modern.

GSDH is very pleased and excited to be part of the BARE project that has recently been launched by the amicollective, a well known Cape Town illustration studio.
“BARE is the ami collectives latest and most ambitious project yet. Essentially it is an art object that we designed and produced to inspire young artists to express themselves on a medium other than the traditional canvas. It is aimed at showcasing the non-commercial side of ami and an attempt to raise money for underprivileged children.”
The BARES will be auctioned off and all the proceeds are going to charities in South Africa. Check out the website http://bare.amicollective.com to see some of the completed BARES.
Our GSDH illustrators Genie and David received permission to illustrate a BARE and are planning exciting and original illustrations. Watch this space!
No commentsThe Bavarian Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan, the oldest brewery of the world, gave us a great reason to raise our glasses! In a pitch, we were able succeed against our competitors and win the complete online-budget.
So, the relaunch of the website www.brauerei-weihenstephan.de, as well as the entire ongoing support of all online activities of the brewery is in our hands.
The high level of creativity was the decisive factor for our new clients. The suggested positioning of the traditional brand, the approved brand strategy and the resulted concepts got the barrel rolling.
Already in the year 1040, Weihenstephan, at that time cloistral brewery of the Benedictine friars, started officially brewing beer. This was the year when abbot Arnold wangled the city of Freising out of the privilege of brewing.
Well then, Prost (as the Bavarian says) – a toast to the collaboration of Bavarian tradition and creativity made in Cape town!

2 commentsThe official movie site for Crank 2 is online. The site presents appealing design, interesting features, sophisticated concepts and user-friendly applications. The user will be provided with a lot of exciting content by means of a trailer and story information as well as downloadable goodies and an online lottery. Moreover, you are able to enter the world of the movie by means of a gallery, information about cast / crew and behind the scenes info. As expected Crank 2 is jam packed with action and a “must” for all action movie fans, who want to watch Chev Chelios on his path between life and death.
Universum Film GmbH came up with a sensational product in Crank 2. GSDH received a challenging brief to design, conceptualize and create the official Crank 2 movie site. We would like to thank Universum Film GmbH for the great collaboration and we are looking forward to working on new and exciting projects with them.

Exciting new key visual for SAE launch in Cape Town
We got an exciting brief from SAE college Cape Town, to create a single key visual to promote the launch of the local branch. This visual would be the cornerstone of all their online and print promotional material.
SAE is an internationally renowned media school with branches all over the world. In fact, both founders of GSDH have studied at SAE colleges in Sydney and Germany respectively. They offer state of the art equipment and innovative teaching techniques to students with ambitions of conquering the extremely competitive media industry.
The challenge was to create a single visual that could be adopted to promote the following courses, Audio Production, Interactive Media Design, Film and Animation.
The design itself was a collaborative effort between Genie Botha, and the David Maclennan. It combined hand drawn illustrations and typography with fresh colours and a strong layout to appeal to prospective SAE students.

GSDH created a high quality website for the Bay Consulting Crew, a company which specializes in the fields of auditing and legal advice.
The design draws parallels between the challenging sport of sailing and the company’s values and ethics.
Sailing is a discipline based on, precision and teamwork, where highest professionalism with regard to concentration, communication and execution is required, especially during turbulent and challenging times.
Likewise, the Bay Consulting Crew is characterized by all of the mentioned skills and is thus able to serve clients on the highest level.
GSDH received the exciting order to implement these skills within one website and has been able to pilot the ship safely into the harbor…

The eggs within Bernbacher’s egg noodles are only laid by happy bavarian outdoor chicken. That does not only taste better but shows again that Bernbacher’s noodles are of top quality - like our microsite, www.gsdh.org/Bernbacher which has been created with regard to Bernbacher’s campaign. A ringtone with the bavarian “Defiliermarsch” of cackling chicken is also provided…

The tough gangster and killer Chev Chelios is back, and is now in need of electricity to keep his new artificial heart beating. His real heart has been stolen by triad mugger Johnny Vang. Vang wants to use Chev’s heart to vitalize triad boss Hu Dong’s life. Slowly but surely, Chev is running out of time…
GSDH received the exciting task to create the official movie site and already provides a teaser site of the movie until the official site is launched…
I stumbled upon this rather ingenious Adbust that happened in Berlin. Pretty damn awesome!

As usual we are starting the year off with a blast! As you know we love Philips and Philips loves our work. After our Philips Camelrace has finished off as a great success in December 2008 Philips Healthcare Germany asked us to produce a new microsite for one of their solutions.
This as well as the rest of our current projects look extremely promising and so we are looking forward to another exciting year and do invite you to join the ride…

GSDH have achieved great success! On the 2nd of December “Annual Multimedia – Yearbook of Digital Marketing 2009” was published, and we were awarded for our b4u-studio website. Our team is truly honored to have received this award, and are eagerly working towards our next one.

After listening to his mix I was so inxpired that I created one of my own (a 30 minute mixtape of really cool chillout songs for those hectic mondays) and sent it in to him. This is what it takes, to take part in the Nature Friends online contest, which we did for the agency Traffic Communications and their client Nature Friends.
The producer of natural cosmetics got a voting portal, mainly done using PHP/mySQL, to give two best friends the opportunity to upload and vote pictures. The best nature friends can win a weekend trip to the beautiful Harz in Germany.

It was such a pleasure to work with Ugo Richard, and we at GSDH had a lot of fun working on this project. Ugo is extremely happy with his new presence on the web, stating that the website measures up to the same high standard as his work.

Capetonian Genie started her career as an interactive designer quite recently, as she originally comes from a Fine Arts background. She studied a BA degree in Fine arts at the University of Pretoria, specializing in drawing and stop motion charcoal animation.
She went to London for two years, where she worked as a chef. While she was chopping away 15 kgs of onions Genie realized that she needed to find a way to channel her creative abilities in a medium that had a bit more career potential. She returned to Cape Town in 2005 to do a diploma in Multimedia design.
Genie started her career at hellocomputer as a designer and flash animator - and this very successful. But now she joined GSDH, lucky us!
Because of her fine arts background Genie likes to bring a quirky sense of style and illustration, to a traditionally slick design field.
The illustration on top was done for the SA/UK exhibition, organized by Rudi de Wet from South Africa and Pete Lewis from the UK. They were working together at the Amicollective at the time, and the exhibition showcased the work of South African and UK illustrators.
It was done in Photoshop, using a Wacom tablet.
